Bad Money Habits That Keep You Broke (And How to Break Them)

Let’s be real:

If you’re stuck financially, it’s not because you’re dumb or unlucky. Most of the time, it’s because of habits.

Bad money habits quietly drain your wallet and keep you broke. The good news? Once you see them, you can break them.

Here are the five biggest ones.

1. Spending More Than You Make

Sounds obvious, but it’s the #1 habit that traps people. Credit cards make it easy to pretend you can afford more than you can.

Break It: Track your spending for 30 days. If more is going out than coming in, cut something immediately.

2. Carrying Credit Card Balances

Paying interest on last month’s tacos and Target runs? That’s money you’ll never get back.

Break It: Stop using the card until the balance is gone. Pay more than the minimum.  Every extra dollar kills interest.

3. Ignoring Your Budget

Flying blind with money guarantees mistakes. If you don’t tell your money where to go, it’ll go everywhere but where it should.

Break It: Build a simple, realistic budget. No spreadsheets needed, even a notebook works.

4. Living for “Right Now”

New car, new phone, new wardrobe. Fun today, broke tomorrow.

Break It: Before you buy, ask: “Will I still care about this in six months?” If not, skip it.

5. Not Saving Anything

“If I made more, I’d save.” Nope. If you can’t save at $50K, you won’t save at $100K.

Break It: Start small, $20 a week. Build the muscle, then increase it.

The Dude’s Take

Bad money habits are sneaky. They feel normal, even fun, in the moment, but they steal your future.

The good news? You don’t have to be perfect. Break one habit at a time and watch your money (and your freedom) grow.
